Driver Surrenders After Hours-Long Standoff on Bedford Express Lanes of SH-183

Shalunda Marie Hayes

On Sunday, August 4th, at 11:52 a.m., Bedford Police initiated a traffic stop in the Express Lanes of S.H. 183 due to speeding. The female driver initially did not yield to officers and informed Bedford Dispatch that she had a gun in the car. The driver eventually pulled over, and officers began protocol for a high-risk traffic stop. The driver, alone in the vehicle, refused to exit for several hours despite officers’ attempts to negotiate.

The SWAT team deployed gas into the vehicle, prompting the suspect to exit and surrender. She was transported to a hospital for evaluation and will be transferred to the Euless jail once medically cleared. The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Shalunda Marie Hayes of Fort Worth, was charged with evading arrest, detention with a vehicle, impersonating a public servant, resisting arrest/search/or transport, and unlawfully carrying a weapon. Hayes was later transferred to Tarrant County Jail after being arraigned.
