On Thursday afternoon, October 3rd, Irving Police officers, along with the SWAT team, were involved in a tense standoff with a barricaded suspect at an apartment complex in the 4000 block of Block Drive in North Irving. The incident, which lasted nearly eight hours, ended with the suspect being taken into custody without any major injuries.
The Irving Police Department (IPD) initially issued a public safety warning, urging residents to avoid the area while SWAT officers worked the scene. IPD also requested, “Please do not post pictures or videos of our officers for their safety and the safety of the community.”
The standoff began around 12:15 PM when Irving PD SWAT was assisting Dallas PD in executing an arrest warrant for an armed robbery suspect. Several individuals exited the apartment upon the officers’ arrival, but one person remained inside, barricading themselves.
The individual in question is believed to be the leader of a group of four men who committed a violent home invasion on September 21st in Dallas. The men followed a woman into her garage on the 4800 block of Elsby Avenue around 10 PM, forced her to the ground, and beat her with a gun. The suspects then stole $75,000 worth of jewelry. Dallas Police identified the suspects through fingerprints and surveillance footage recovered from the garage. Two of the suspects had already been arrested on September 30th.
At 8:40 PM, IPD announced that the barricaded suspect had been apprehended. In a statement, IPD expressed gratitude to local residents, saying, "We can’t thank the residents in this area enough. They provided water, ice, snacks, & shade for our officers working. Thank you for your support!"
