In an inspiring effort to support veterans and shelter animals, Fort Worth Animal Care and Control is set to launch P.A.W.S. for Patriots on Saturday, Nov. 16, from noon to 5 p.m. at the North Animal Campus, located at 350 Hillshire Drive. The initiative is designed to provide veterans and service members with therapeutic volunteer opportunities that promote healing, connection, and purpose through interaction with shelter pets.

The event will feature structured volunteer roles where veterans can engage in animal socialization, training, and exercise activities, creating an environment that benefits both veterans and the animals. For many veterans, the transition to civilian life can bring challenges like stress, anxiety, and depression, and P.A.W.S. for Patriots aims to offer meaningful roles that provide both companionship and therapeutic relief. Shelter animals, often in need of attention and exercise, benefit from the companionship and discipline veterans bring, creating a mutually beneficial experience.

Fort Worth Animal Care and Control has arranged several highlights for the day:

  • Free Vaccines and Resources: Free pet vaccinations will be offered to service members and veterans, along with resource bags filled with pet essentials.
  • Community Support: Local veterans, community leaders, animal welfare advocates, and Fort Worth Animal Care and Control staff will gather to support and participate in the program.
  • Food Trucks and Vendors: The event will include food trucks and local vendors, creating a lively atmosphere for families and individuals attending. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own leashed pets, who will enjoy a safe and inclusive space at the event.

Through this program, veterans can:

  1. Serve: Take on active roles in helping animals by socializing, training, and exercising them.
  2. Connect: Form bonds with a community that values discipline, commitment, and healing.
  3. Heal: Experience the therapeutic effects of working with animals, which has been shown to reduce stress and improve mental health.

Community members are invited to join, support, and celebrate the dedication and compassion of local veterans and service members.
