Fort Worth Secures 38 Acres for Open Space Conservation

The Fort Worth City Council has approved the purchase of 38.2 acres from Jefferson Primrose Land Holdings LLC as part of an effort to preserve open space and enhance the city’s green infrastructure.

The $155,903 acquisition, funded by the 2022 Bond Program, aligns with the city’s Open Space Conservation Program and Mayor Mattie Parker’s Good Natured Greenspace Initiative, which aims to conserve 10,000 acres of greenspace within five years. Jefferson Primrose Land Holdings sold the land at a significantly reduced price of $4,081.25 per acre, supporting future development, including a nearby neighborhood park.

Preservation Goals:
The property will remain in its natural state under the management of the Park & Recreation Department. Plans may involve integrating the site into a broader network of parks and trails connecting to greenspaces in Llano Springs, where additional land has been recently donated to the city.

The new greenspace features critical habitats for migratory birds, birds of prey, and endangered Fort Worth Prairie ecosystems, along with wetlands and portions of Summer Creek. These wetlands, a priority for conservation, drain into Benbrook Lake, a drinking water source for the area.

Future Development:
In addition to preserving wildlife habitats, the acquisition opens opportunities to connect with the city’s Active Transportation Plan trail network, enhancing recreational options for residents in the rapidly growing region.

This purchase underscores Fort Worth’s collaborative approach to conservation, combining city initiatives with private partnerships to expand and protect natural areas for the community.

The acquisition supports the Open Space Conservation Program and Mayor Mattie Parker’s Good Natured Greenspace Initiative goal of preserving 10,000 acres of greenspace across Fort Worth in the next five years while also growing and enhancing the City’s park system.
