Garland Police Investigate Fatal Self-Inflicted Gunshot During Traffic Stop

The Garland Police Department is investigating the death of a man who sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a traffic stop on November 18, 2024, at approximately 11:00 p.m.

The incident began when an officer stopped a vehicle in the 800 block of Bay Shore Drive for observed traffic violations. The car was occupied by three individuals. During the stop, the officer suspected narcotics possession and began an investigation.

The front passenger unexpectedly exited the vehicle and fled on foot. A backup officer pursued the individual. Moments later, a single gunshot was heard, and the fleeing individual collapsed.

Officers provided life-saving measures until the Garland Fire Department arrived. The individual was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A loaded firearm, determined to be stolen from Plano, Texas, was found next to the individual. The investigation revealed the gunshot wound was self-inflicted, but it remains unclear whether it was intentional or accidental.

The officer’s body-worn camera was activated during the entire incident, and no officers discharged their firearms.

The identities of the deceased and the two remaining occupants are being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The investigation is ongoing.
