Dallas Man Sentenced to 24 Years for Aggravated Assault After Drug-Fueled Crash Leaves Victim Triplegic

Brodrick Benton

A Dallas County jury has found 42-year-old Brodrick Benton guilty of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and sentenced him to 24 years in prison following a high-impact crash at a red light on Jim Miller and Scyene Roads.

According to investigators, Benton was under the influence of PCP and cocaine when he drove into a line of cars stopped at the intersection. The first vehicle struck was a Dodge Challenger. The male driver suffered catastrophic injuries, leaving him permanently triplegic and unable to speak for nearly three years following the crash.

During trial proceedings, Benton argued he should not be held responsible due to the victim not wearing a seatbelt. The jury rejected that defense and delivered a guilty verdict, ultimately sentencing him to 24 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Taylor Cowin and Erik Lisowski. DA Investigator Claudia Marroquin and Paralegal Andretta Lewis assisted in the prosecution. The Dallas Police Department led the investigation.
