LEWISVILLE, TX — A woman was fatally shot by Lewisville police early Wednesday morning following a multi-city pursuit that ended in a commercial parking lot off the I-35E service road.
Shortly after midnight on July 23, an officer with the Lewisville Police Department initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle whose driver was believed to have an active felony warrant from another agency. During the stop, the officer confirmed the identity of the driver and was awaiting confirmation of the warrant when the driver fled the scene at a high rate of speed.
The female suspect, later identified as 43-year-old Joanna Rebecca Rogers of Carrollton, led police on a pursuit through several jurisdictions. During the chase, Rogers struck an LPD patrol vehicle but continued fleeing. The officer involved in the collision was not injured.
The pursuit ended in the 2200 block of the southbound I-35E service road in Lewisville, where officers attempted to arrest Rogers in a commercial parking lot. According to police, Rogers displayed a handgun and refused to comply with multiple commands to drop the weapon. LPD officers discharged their firearms, striking Rogers.
Officers rendered aid and called for medical assistance. Rogers was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after 1 a.m. A handgun was recovered from her vehicle. No other injuries were reported.
Four LPD officers involved in the shooting have been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of investigations. The Texas Rangers will conduct an independent criminal investigation, while LPD will carry out an internal review of the incident in accordance with department policy.
This remains an active investigation.
