The Temple Police Department is mourning the loss of Officer Toalua "Charlie" Aumua, who drowned on Friday, August 1, 2025, while off duty and spending time with family at the lake.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:48 a.m. in the 4200 block of Westcliff Road. Emergency response agencies from across the region assisted in the search and recovery efforts over the course of two days.
On Saturday, August 2, at approximately 9:45 a.m., Officer Aumua’s body was recovered by the Morgan’s Point Resort Dive Team, assisted by the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team and Texas Parks and Wildlife Dive Team. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by Justice of the Peace Larry Wilkey and transported for autopsy.
Officer Aumua had served with the Temple Police Department since August 2020. He was a field trainer, member of the SWAT team, and was named the department’s Officer of the Year in 2023. He had also received two life-saving awards and was previously honored as Recruit Officer of the Year in 2021.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Aumua Family,” said Temple Police Chief Shawn Reynolds. “Charlie was not only an excellent police officer, perhaps more importantly, he was a good person and a good man. He was a man of great faith, and we will miss him greatly.”
Support services are being provided to Officer Aumua’s family and department personnel. The department extended thanks to the many agencies and individuals who contributed to the search effort, including those who volunteered their boats.
Further details will be released as approved by the Aumua family.
