On Sunday, August 3rd, Officer Slaughter with the Lewisville Police Department conducted a routine traffic stop for expired registration and no proof of insurance. Under the Texas Transportation Code, operating a motor vehicle on a public highway without valid registration and insurance is prohibited. Due to department policy, Officer Slaughter informed the driver that the vehicle would be towed for lack of insurance.
While performing an inventory of the vehicle, Officer Slaughter detected the odor of unburnt marijuana, which gave him probable cause to conduct a more thorough search beyond the standard inventory procedure. Assisted by Officer Acosta, a search of the vehicle revealed a concealed compartment containing approximately 285 pounds of marijuana.
Officer Slaughter has proudly served with the Lewisville Police Department since 2021. Prior to joining the department, he served as an Army Combat Engineer with the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Georgia, and was deployed to Afghanistan. Following his military service, he began his law enforcement career with the Monroe, Louisiana Police Department before relocating to Texas to continue his commitment to public service.
The large quantity of marijuana seized during the stop will not reach the streets of Lewisville, thanks to Officer Slaughter’s vigilance and dedication to the safety of the community.
