Latest Robot-Assisted Surgery Arrives at Las Colinas Medical Center

daVinci Si Surgical System

Irving's Las Colinas Medical Center has announced the arrival of new robotic technology in the form of the FDA-approved daVinci® Si Surgical System

"This is an exciting time for our hospital and community", said Daniela Decell, CEO, Las Colinas Medical Center. "Robot-assisted surgery offers our patients a less invasive surgical option while also minimizing recovery time. Due to the inherent value proposition for all hospital stakeholders, we knew it was the right thing to do."

The robotic system enhances the surgeons' skills with computer technology, enabling them to see vital anatomical structures more clearly and perform surgical procedures more precisely. The technology extends the surgeon's capabilities by providing a threedimensional view of the operating field and improving access to the surgical site through small instrument "ports" that eliminate the need for large incisions. The system also provides full freedom of movement at its instrument tips, allowing precise operation in a closed chest, abdomen or pelvis.

"By enhancing surgical capability through this advanced technology, patients are returning to active, productive lives in an expedited fashion" said Dr. Ronney Stadler, colorectal surgeon with Las Colinas Medical Center. "Patients who have experienced robotic surgery have consistently reported high satisfaction with the procedure."

Baylor Medical Center previously boasted that Baylor Irving was the only medical center in Irving, Las Colinas, Coppell or Grand Prairie to offer this advanced robotic system.  It is a win for Irving residents to have Las Colinas Medical Center offer this advanced medical technology.

The da Vinci Si has several unique features designed to provide additional clinical benefits and efficiency in the operating room, many of which translate to patient benefits. Here are a few features of the da Vinci Si:

  • Enhanced 3D, high-definition vision of operative field with up to 10.
  • Magnification
  • New optional dual console allows second surgeon to provide assistance
  • Superior visual clarity of tissue and anatomy
  • Surgical dexterity and precision far greater than even the human hand
  • Updated and simplified user interface to enhance OR efficiency
  • New ergonomic settings for greater surgeon comfort
  • Many benefits to the patient:
    • Less pain and scarring
    • Preservation of vital small nerves and blood vessels
    • Smaller incisions (usually 1- to 2-centimeters)
    • Less blood loss during procedure
    • Quicker recovery (usually one to three days)
    • Lower risk of infection
    • Shorter hospital stay
    • Fewer or no transfusions which is very beneficial to patients that do not accept blood transfusions due to their biblical beliefs

"This technology takes surgery beyond the limits of the human hand. This is the future of medicine and it's exciting to know we can offer it here in Las Colinas," said Dr. Phil Swanson, Chair of Surgery with Las Colinas Medical Center.
