The Fort Worth Police Department (FWPD) is rolling out advanced technology aimed at reducing celebratory gunfire incidents, particularly during high-risk celebrations like the Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve.
Discharging firearms within city limits is illegal and poses significant safety risks. To address this, FWPD has launched a pilot program utilizing gunshot detection technology in areas with frequent shooting incidents.
The system incorporates Flock and City pan tilt zoom (PTZ) cameras, paired with Acoem Gunshot Detection units, to pinpoint the exact location of gunshots. These sensors are linked to cameras that automatically adjust to the detected sound's direction, and alerts are sent to the Real-Time Crime Center (RTCC) for immediate action.
This initiative comes ahead of the busy summer celebration season, with FWPD planning increased educational efforts around gun safety and the legal consequences of celebratory gunfire. The department also reminds the community that possessing fireworks in Fort Worth can result in fines up to $2,000.
Residents are encouraged to report illegal fireworks via the MyFW App, by calling 817-392-4444, or submitting reports online.
