The City of Irving will host its 2012 Martin Luther King Jr. Observance on Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Irving Arts Center, 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd. The celebration will commemorate the establishment of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in D.C. with the theme “A Living Memorial.” The observance is open to the public and there is no cost for admission.
“Dr. King made such unforgettable contributions to our country—that’s why we’re inviting everyone to join us in Irving for what promises to be an unforgettable celebration,” said Councilman Dennis Webb. “Irving’s Parks and Recreation Department always does an outstanding job putting on family events and I know that the King celebration will be no exception.”
The observance will feature some of the region’s premier talent, including recording artist Brenda Ellis, Dallas Black Dance Theatre II and violinist Richmond Punch. In addition, the Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce will host a free post-event reception for the more than 700 guests who are expected to attend the celebration.
“We have top-tier talent coming to Irving for this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. celebration,” said Special Event Coordinator Jackie Madden. “Through sound, word and movement, we hope to bring Irving some of the energy that was felt in D.C. when Dr. King’s monument was first unveiled.”
