Double Celebration for Coombs Creek Trail Expansion in North Oak Cliff

North Oak Cliff residents will celebrate the completion of significant extensions to the Coombs Creek Trail with a "double" ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, April 11th at 3:30 PM.

The event will kick off at Moss Park (near 119 S Plymouth Rd), where the City of Dallas’ Park and Recreation Department recently completed the Coombs Creek Trail extension to the park. Council Member Chad West, Park Board Vice Chair JR Huerta, Dallas County Commissioner Elba Garcia, and North Oak Cliff residents will be in attendance.

Following remarks from elected officials at Moss Park between 3:40 and 4:00 PM, the first ribbon will be cut at 4:00 PM. Attendees are then invited to participate in a family-friendly, 4-mile bike ride along the Coombs Creek Trail to the eastern portion of the expansion.

The bike ride will culminate at the new Coombs Creek Bridge (accessible from 1651 Jr Dr) and the North Beckley Avenue crossing, where the second ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at approximately 4:30 PM. This eastern extension was a collaborative project between the City of Dallas’ Transportation and Public Works Department and the Dallas County Public Works Department.

After the second ribbon cutting, attendees can bike back to Moss Park, head home, or join for informal celebrations at Chip’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers (1605 N Beckley Ave.).

These new trail extensions on the west and east create a nearly 4-mile continuous path for North Oak Cliff residents to safely enjoy walking, strolling, skating, and biking. The Coombs Creek Trail provides a crucial east-west connection for much of District 1, linking residents to green spaces, neighbors, and local businesses. The eastern extension to Beckley Avenue also provides a vital connection for pedestrians and cyclists to the pedestrian/bike bridge along I-30, offering access to downtown Dallas.

“This double ribbon cutting is a huge win to make District 1 even more connected, active, and safe for pedestrians and cyclists,” said District 1 Council Member Chad West. “We are so excited to join with the community to celebrate the Coombs Creek Trail extension. I want to invite everyone to come out and experience the expanded Coombs Creek Trail firsthand.”

Dallas County Commissioner for District 4, Dr. Elba Garcia, added, “Coombs Creek Trail is a vital connection to the Margaret McDermott Pedestrian Bridge. This is a collaborative effort between the City of Dallas, Dallas County and TxDOT to join the north Oak Cliff area to downtown, giving residents the opportunity to continue exploring the growing trail system in our region.”

JR Huerta, Vice Chair of the Dallas Park Board, stated, “The Coombs Creek Trail addition from Moss Park to Beckley Ave. not only represents a way for the community to get out and enjoy the outdoors, but also a different means to connect our community between home and work.”

Daniel Huerta, Coombs Creek Trail advocate and Dallas Trails Coalition Representative, commented, “The Coombs Creek Trail extension now offers a reliable path for those who love the natural beauties of our city and serene pathways through our neighborhoods. The connection provided by the Margaret McDermott Bridge to the rest of the trail system is vital in connecting urbanites with the natural treasures in the heart of Dallas. As an advocate and daily user of our beautiful trails, I think I speak for all those who share my passion and appreciation for this hidden treasure.”

All community members, cyclists, and outdoor enthusiasts are invited to attend this free event. Attendees are encouraged to bring their bikes and helmets.
