Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert announced today, April 11, 2025, the appointment of Daniel Comeaux as the next Chief of the Dallas Police Department (DPD), effective Wednesday, April 23.
Comeaux brings 33 years of law enforcement experience to the role and currently serves as the Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) Houston Field Division. In this capacity, he oversees 12 offices across Texas, including major cities like Houston, San Antonio, and Austin. His extensive jurisdiction covers nearly 16 million residents across 114 counties and 118,000 square miles, including a 645-mile stretch of the United States-Mexico border. His leadership has been characterized by a focus on intelligence-driven crime reduction, operational efficiency, interagency collaboration, and officer development.
“Special Agent in Charge Comeaux has consistently demonstrated a proven track record of successfully addressing complex crime challenges across large scale, diverse populations and geographic areas – that span internationally,” said Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert. “The City of Dallas continues to achieve crime reduction year after year. I am confident with SAC Comeaux at the helm, we will continue to be one of the safest large cities in the country, while building trust, and bolstering our recruitment and retention efforts. I want to thank Interim Chief Michael T. Igo for his longstanding service to the Dallas Police Department, and his willingness to lead during this time of transition.”
SAC Comeaux was selected as one of five finalists who underwent a rigorous vetting process that included feedback panels with key stakeholders, as well as meet and greet sessions with the City Council and the public. Feedback was solicited from participants on each candidate.
A New Orleans native, Comeaux began his law enforcement career in 1991 with the Houston Police Department (HPD), where he specialized in community policing, narcotics enforcement, and high-risk investigations. In 1997, he transitioned to the DEA, leading major operations in Houston, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, targeting violent crime and drug trafficking. His strategies have resulted in significant crime reduction, including a 40% decrease in overdose deaths in Laredo, Texas.
“I joined the police force because I witnessed what can happen to neighborhoods that aren’t safe,” said SAC Comeaux. “At the federal level, I am known as the local cop because of my collaborative approach to tackling crime and my dedication to developing leaders in public safety who are bridge builders for the community. I am proud that my career in law enforcement has come full circle and look forward to serving alongside the men and women of the Dallas Police Department.”
