19-Year-Old Killed By Drunk Driver After Stopping to Direct Traffic on I-30 in Arlington

Brittani Watkins

A 19-year-old man was struck and killed early Saturday morning, June 28, 2025, following a multi-vehicle crash on the westbound lanes of Interstate 30 near Baird Farm Road.

Arlington Police responded to the scene at approximately 3:50 a.m. and found the man lying unresponsive in the roadway. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified him as Angel Rufino Alonso. His cause of death was listed as multiple blunt force injuries.

Investigators determined that Alonso was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado when he collided with an abandoned, unoccupied Jaguar XE parked on the right shoulder of the highway. The crash pushed both vehicles into the main lanes of traffic, where they became disabled.

According to police, Alonso exited his vehicle and attempted to direct oncoming traffic around the wreck using the light from his cell phone. A short time later, a 2014 Lexus IS 250 traveling westbound on I-30 struck both Alonso and the Silverado. The impact caused the Lexus to roll onto its side.

The driver of the Lexus, 33-year-old Brittani Watkins, was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A 33-year-old male passenger in the vehicle sustained serious injuries and was also hospitalized.

Witnesses at the scene told officers they observed the Lexus swerving prior to the collision. After speaking with Watkins, officers suspected intoxication and obtained a warrant for a blood sample. The results are pending laboratory analysis.

Watkins was arrested on one count of Driving While Intoxicated after being medically cleared. She is currently being held at the Tarrant County Jail. Police said the investigation remains active and additional charges are possible.
