Irving Man Sentenced to 45 Years After Toddler Dies from Scalding Burns

Defendant: Chancellor Nelson

DALLAS COUNTY, TX - A 27-year-old Irving man, Chancellor Alexander Nelson, has been sentenced to 45 years in prison after pleading guilty to Injury to a Child Causing Serious Bodily Injury by Omission, following the death of his 16-month-old son.  He had also been charged with Capital Murder, but agreed to plead guilty to the lesser charge.

The case stemmed from a tragic incident that occurred at an Irving residence, where prosecutors say Nelson inflicted scalding water burns on his child’s face. Despite the severity of the injuries, the child was not taken for medical treatment for two days.

During that time, the toddler experienced a hypoxic event that caused swelling in his brain and led to organ failure. On the evening of the second day without care, the baby reportedly suffered a six-hour seizure before becoming unresponsive around midnight. At that point, the child’s mother called 911. The child was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The case was investigated by Detective Andy Padrutt of the Irving Police Department, whose thorough and compassionate work was commended by the District Attorney’s Office.

Nelson entered a guilty plea and was sentenced on October 23, 2025, in Dallas County Criminal District Court. He has been in custody since his arrest in August 2023.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Kalle Riner and Jennifer Sawyer, with investigative support from DA Investigator Laura Brakefield and Victim Advocate Audri Graham.
