On June 10, at approximately 1:04 a.m., the Irving Police Department responded to the 3700 block of Block Drive (Brookstone Apartments) for a report of a shooting. When officers arrived they located one adult male suffering from a gunshot wound.
While investigating the shooting, officers were told that the suspect was still in the area.
Officers were confronted by a suspect who was armed with a rifle and shots were fired. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The investigation has revealed that the initial shooting occurred at the apartment complex pool. The suspect was unknown to those at the party and had not been invited. The victim was told by someone at the party that the suspect had a gun. The shooting victim approached the suspect and told him that they did not want a gun at the party and asked him to take the gun home. Without saying anything, the suspect shot the victim.
The suspect calmly walked away and left in the direction of his apartment.
When officers arrived, witnesses pointed them in the direction of the suspect. As officers were walking in front of building 3610, the suspect walked out the front door of his apartment carrying an assault rifle and raised it in the direction of the officers. The officers feared for their safety and shot the suspect. Officers believed that there were additional people inside the suspect’s apartment, so a perimeter was setup and the
tactical team was called.
The Tactical Team responded and cleared the second floor area and did not locate any additional people. The suspect was located on the second floor balcony area and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The male who was originally shot by the suspect is a 31-year-old Irving resident. He was transported to Parkland Hospital with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. He was listed in good condition.
The suspect has been identified as 31-year-old Irving resident Rusty Edwards. A book-in photo of Edwards is not available at this time.
The identities of the two officers who fired shots during the incident are not being released. No other officers or bystanders were injured during the shooting.
