Fort Worth experienced a hectic night on Tuesday, December 2, as the Fire Department responded to multiple emergencies across the city.
At 9:47 p.m., crews were dispatched to a home on Cornish Avenue after receiving a call about a house fire. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy flames consuming the one-story wood frame home. The first working fire of the night was declared, and crews quickly moved to search the house and suppress the blaze. After 20 minutes, the Incident Commander declared the fire under control. Two residents were transported to a local hospital for smoke inhalation, and two firefighters were treated for minor burns. Despite rescue attempts, the family’s pets did not survive. The American Red Cross responded to assist the displaced adults, and investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
Shortly after, at 1:43 a.m., FWFD responded to another structure fire on Whisper Drive in southwest Fort Worth. Firefighters arrived within five minutes to find heavy smoke and flames consuming a large two-story brick home. Crews declared a second working fire, pulling lines to extinguish the fire while searching the residence. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. Four adults and one child were displaced, and the Red Cross provided assistance. The cause of this fire is also under investigation.
Amid the firefighting efforts, crews were also managing a serious motor vehicle accident involving extrication on the North Freeway. During the incident, the Battalion 6 Chief’s car was struck by a vehicle that failed to yield. Fortunately, no injuries occurred, but the incident highlighted the ongoing dangers emergency responders face on the road.
The Fort Worth Fire Department urged drivers to slow down and move over when approaching emergency vehicles to help keep both first responders and the public safe.
