Fort Worth Police Launch Constitutional Policing Unit to Enhance Accountability and Transparency

Fort Worth, TX – The Fort Worth Police Department (FWPD) has announced the creation of a Constitutional Policing Unit (CPU), a strategic initiative designed to strengthen legality, accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement across department operations.

The CPU complements the work of the Office of the Police Oversight Monitor (OPOM) and serves as an internal mechanism to ensure sustained compliance and ongoing improvements. Operating under the chief of police, the unit is staffed by a civilian CPU director responsible for strategy and reporting, a sworn lieutenant serving as FWPD liaison, and a part-time contract criminologist providing analytics and quality assurance.

The unit will focus on structured reviews and inspections of policies, training, operations, and internal controls, as well as monthly and quarterly data assessments to identify emerging trends. It will also develop corrective-action plans and monitor their implementation.

FWPD leadership emphasized that the creation of the CPU represents a major step forward for the department and the city. The initiative aims to build community trust, improve coordination, reduce risk, strengthen internal systems, and position Fort Worth as a national model for constitutional policing.

“This unit strengthens our ability to ensure fair and consistent policing across the city,” said FWPD officials, reaffirming their commitment to transparency, accountability, and constitutional law enforcement.
