Irving Police Warn Against Celebratory Gunfire and Fireworks on New Year's Eve

IRVING, Texas - The Irving Police Department is urging residents to avoid celebratory gunfire and to take simple precautions to keep the community safe as New Year’s Eve approaches.

Police said celebratory gunfire, often occurring around midnight, involves firing a weapon into the air to mark the holiday. While some may view the act as harmless, officers emphasized it poses a serious and potentially deadly risk.

According to the department, bullets fired into the air must come down and can strike people blocks or even miles away. Falling rounds are capable of penetrating roofs, vehicles, and windows, and victims are often unaware they are in danger and have no way to protect themselves.

In addition to discouraging gunfire, the Irving Police Department is asking residents to help keep 911 lines open for true emergencies. Officials said someone experiencing a life-or-death situation may need immediate access to emergency services.

Residents who witness fireworks being discharged and can provide an exact location and a description of the person responsible are asked to call the Irving Police Department’s non-emergency number at 972-273-1010 instead of 911.

Police also reminded the public to make safe choices during holiday celebrations, including not driving while impaired and bringing pets indoors to protect them from loud noises and potential hazards.
