DALLAS, TX - A decades-old mystery has finally been solved thanks to the dedication of Detective Ryan Dalby of the Dallas Police Department.
Norman Prater was reported missing on January 14, 1973. Despite extensive investigation, his whereabouts remained unknown for years. Later that year, on July 9, 1973, an unidentified white male was killed in a hit-and-run on Highway 35 in Rock Port, Texas. Despite efforts by Aransas County authorities, the victim’s identity remained a mystery.
Recently, Detective Dalby re-examined the Prater case and discovered a compelling connection between the missing Dallas man and the unidentified Aransas County victim. Through careful investigation and family contact, he confirmed the unknown victim was indeed Norman Prater, finally bringing resolution to both cases.
Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux praised the detective’s work, saying, “Detective Dalby’s dedication, skill, and compassion have not only solved a historical case but have performed the most vital duty of our Missing Persons Unit: providing closure to a grieving family.”
After 50 years, Mr. Isaac Prater, Norman’s brother, now has answers regarding his sibling’s disappearance. The Dallas Police Department commended the perseverance, interagency cooperation, and commitment that made this resolution possible.
This case underscores the enduring mission of law enforcement to seek justice and provide closure for families, no matter how much time has passed.
