A Denton County jury has sentenced Arrion Keonta Morris to life in prison for the 2024 murder of Jonathon Michael Berto, closing a case that began as a routine traffic incident and ended in a senseless loss of life.
The sentence was handed down Monday, December 8, 2025, following Morris’ guilty plea in the June 9, 2024 shooting that occurred near the 1200 block of South I-35E in Lewisville. According to investigators, Morris and Berto were involved in a minor traffic accident and pulled into a nearby parking lot to exchange information. During that encounter, Morris shot Berto without warning and fled the scene.
Berto was left in the parking lot for several hours before a passerby discovered his body and called 911. His family learned of his death in a devastating manner, arriving while officers were still securing the crime scene.
Lewisville Police Department officers quickly identified the case as a homicide, secured evidence, and recovered surveillance footage that proved critical to the investigation. Detectives worked through the night and into the following days, identifying Morris as the suspect within 12 hours. A surveillance operation lasting more than 30 hours ultimately led to Morris’ arrest with assistance from Mesquite police.
About a month later, Morris confessed to the killing, including details about disposing of the firearm and attempting to conceal his vehicle. Although he pleaded guilty to murder, Morris declined a 40-year plea deal and chose to have a jury decide his punishment. After hearing testimony and reviewing extensive evidence, jurors returned a sentence of life in prison.
Authorities say the case highlights the coordinated efforts of patrol officers, detectives, specialized units, and regional law enforcement partners. While the sentence brings legal closure, officials acknowledged the lasting impact of the crime on Berto’s family and the community.
Investigators expressed hope that the verdict provides some measure of justice for Jonathon Michael Berto, whose death they described as sudden, avoidable, and deeply felt by all involved.
