FORT WORTH, Texas - A 17-year-old has been arrested in connection with a string of car fires that terrorized South Fort Worth residents over the holiday season.
Authorities say Evan Banda was taken into custody just before 6 a.m. Thursday, January 8th, at his home. Though a juvenile, Banda is expected to face charges as an adult.
Fort Worth Police Chief Eddie Garcia praised the teamwork between fire and police investigators in catching the suspect, noting the importance of acting quickly when dealing with potentially escalating crimes. “When individuals are taking part in these types of crimes, they will escalate to something at some point. It's imperative to be proactive, be vigilant,” he said.
The arson spree included five separate fires set between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day, all occurring overnight between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. Most of the vehicles were parked on corner lots and away from the direct view of homes near Fox Run Park, according to Battalion Chief David Jones, Fort Worth’s chief fire investigator.
Investigators said tracking Banda was challenging because there were no license plates to help identify him. Ultimately, a series of neighborhood surveillance videos allowed authorities to follow his path, leading to the arrest.
Authorities executed a warrant at Banda’s residence Wednesday night. Officers confirmed he was inside and took him into custody without incident.
No injuries were reported during any of the fires, and the investigation is ongoing.
