FORT WORTH, Texas - A 47-year-old man was shot and killed early Monday morning after a confrontation with a homeowner who reported the man was attempting to break into a garage on the city’s east side, according to police.
Officers with the Fort Worth Police Department were dispatched around 6:00 a.m. on January 12, 2026, to the 3400 block of Avenue L. When officers arrived, they found a man lying on the sidewalk with an apparent gunshot wound to his torso. Despite medical intervention, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said the suspect told detectives he saw and heard the man on his property trying to gain entry into a locked garage. The suspect confronted the individual and ordered him to leave. According to police, the man then aggressively approached the suspect, who fired multiple shots.
The wounded man fled on foot but collapsed a short distance away near the intersection of Avenue L and Bishop. Police said the suspect immediately called 911 to report the shooting and request medical assistance.
The suspect remained at the scene and is cooperating fully with investigators. No arrests have been made at this time as homicide detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the deceased man as 47-year-old Fabian Abernathy.
