North Texas continues to feel the strain of winter weather as freezing temperatures challenge communities, residents, and local businesses. Officials are urging people to stay informed and take steps now to reduce the risk of damage, especially to home plumbing.
The City of Irving is encouraing all residents to keep up with the latest forecasts and warnings from the National Weather Service, as conditions can change quickly during extreme cold events.
Preventing Frozen Pipes At Home
Irving Water Utilities is reminding residents that frozen and burst pipes can occur even if plumbing is not directly exposed to freezing air. To help protect homes, officials recommend the following prevention tips to protect pipes:
-
Drip interior faucets, particularly those on exterior-facing walls
-
Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around pipes
-
Turn off irrigation systems when temperatures fall below freezing
-
Protect outdoor faucets by wrapping them with a towel and plastic bag secured with duct tape if commercial covers are unavailable
-
Disconnect garden hoses and store them in a protected area
