IRVING, Texas - Construction is underway at Northwest Park as the City of Irving begins a $1.5 million project to modernize playground facilities and improve lighting throughout the park and recreation center.

City officials said the work is taking place at Northwest Park, located at 2800 Cheyenne St., and includes replacing nearly 30-year-old playground equipment and upgrading lighting in key areas of the park.

The existing playground and surrounding hardscape were installed in 1997, and replacement parts are no longer available. The outdated equipment is being replaced with new play structures designed for children ages 2 to 5 and 5 to 12, along with a new swing set. Additional improvements to the playground area include new concrete walkways, new playground surfacing, synthetic turf, repainting the metal columns and frame of the existing shade structure, and replacing the shade fabric.

City officials said playground renovations are expected to be completed later this summer.

Lighting upgrades at the Northwest Park Recreation Center, nearby parking lots, and tennis courts were completed in January. Crews are now working on additional lighting along approximately one mile of the park’s trail system, with completion expected in April.

The project is funded through a combination of Community Development Block Grant funds and Park Bond funds. City officials said the improvements align with recommendations from the 2019 Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Master Plan and are intended to enhance safety, accessibility, and recreational opportunities for residents.

The city said additional updates will be provided as construction progresses.
