Irving Fire Department Accepting Applications for Free Spring 2026 Citizens Fire Academy

IRVING, Texas - The Irving Fire Department is now accepting applications for its Free Spring 2026 Citizens Fire Academy, with the deadline to apply set for March 1.

Established in 2002, the Citizens Fire Academy (CFA) offers Irving residents and members of the local business community an inside look at how the department operates and serves the public. The seven-week program includes seven Tuesday evening classes along with two Saturday sessions designed to introduce participants to various aspects of fire and emergency services.

While the CFA is not an accredited fire academy and does not provide firefighting certification or employment opportunities, the program is intended to educate community members about the department’s responsibilities and day-to-day operations.

Participants will learn about topics including fire service history and traditions, fire and arson investigations, emergency medical services, fire communications, hazardous materials response, technical rescue, and home fire prevention. Additional sessions will cover recruiting and training, fire codes, protective gear such as SCBA, and engine and truck operations.

Hands-on demonstrations are also included, giving participants the opportunity to experience tools and techniques used by firefighters, including extrication equipment commonly known as the “Jaws of Life.”

To be eligible, applicants must be at least 18 years old and live or work within the City of Irving.

Classes will be held at the Irving/Grand Prairie Training Facility, located at 4850 N. Belt Line Road, as well as the Fire Administration building at 845 W. Irving Boulevard. Applications must be submitted by March 1 to be considered for the Spring 2026 session.
