FORT WORTH, Texas - A person experiencing a mental health crisis was taken into custody after barricading themselves inside a residence and gunshots were heard from within the home during a police response, according to the Fort Worth Police Department.
North Division officers were first called Thursday, Februay 19th, to a residence near the 800 block of San Miguel Trail in the Haslet area for an investigation related to an individual in crisis. Officers located the adult and requested assistance from the department’s Crisis Intervention Team. Police said no offense had occurred at that time, and an information report was completed with a follow-up visit scheduled.
During the follow-up visit Friday, Crisis Intervention Team officers attempted to make contact with the individual, who then barricaded themselves inside the residence. While officers awaited additional resources, gunshots were heard coming from inside the home. Authorities said it remains unclear whether the shots were directed toward officers or fired randomly within the residence.
The Fort Worth Police Department’s SWAT and Directed Response Units responded to the scene. After several hours of communication efforts, the individual exited the home and was taken into custody without incident.
The person was transported to an area hospital for evaluation. Police said the investigation remains active and it has not yet been determined whether charges will be filed.
Officials stated that all available resources were used to prioritize the safety of the individual and surrounding neighborhood during the incident.
