Nimitz High School Senior Earns Spot at Academic Decathlon Nationals

IRVING, Texas — A Nimitz High School senior is headed to the national stage after earning an invitation to compete in the United States Academic Decathlon National Competition.

Geraldo Medina will represent Texas as one of the top Scholastic Division students in the state. The competition begins with virtual events on April 9, followed by in-person events April 23–25 in California.

Medina’s selection marks a milestone for the Nimitz Academic Decathlon program, becoming the first student from the school to compete at the in-person national competition. While a Nimitz team previously qualified for nationals virtually in 2015, this is the first time a student will attend and compete in person.

He earned his spot after a strong showing at the Thomas E. Moseley State Academic Decathlon Meet, where he ranked among the top Scholastic competitors in Texas.

“I was shocked and completely lost for words,” Medina said. “I remember jumping out of my bed and going straight to my brother to tell him the news.”

In his first year competing in Academic Decathlon, Medina adapted quickly to the program’s demands. He said persistence played a key role in his success.

“Even though I had a lot of ups and downs throughout my journey… I knew to never give up,” he said. “There will always be another opportunity to prove to everybody that you can compete with some of the best.”

Medina credits his study habits, including color-coded notes, along with his background in band for helping him succeed, particularly in the music category.

Looking ahead, he said he is most excited about meeting other students and competing at a high level.

“My biggest goal is to have fun and enjoy the moment,” Medina said. “It’s an honor to compete with some of the best decathletes in the country.”

A lifelong Irving ISD student, Medina said representing his district on a national stage is especially meaningful.

“This opportunity is meaningful to me because it gives me a chance to demonstrate my growth and showcase that Irving ISD students can compete with some of the best in the country,” he said.

Irving ISD officials said they are proud of Medina’s accomplishment and look forward to supporting him as he represents Nimitz High School, the district, and Texas at the national competition.
