Fort Worth City councilmembers join Choctaw guests beside the historical marker

FORT WORTH, Texas — A new Texas Historical Marker honoring the Choctaw Code Talkers was unveiled April 1 at Veterans Memorial Park, recognizing the critical role Choctaw soldiers played during World War I.

The ceremony, held at 4120 Camp Bowie Blvd., brought together tribal leaders, military representatives, elected officials, and community members to commemorate the soldiers who used their native language to transmit coded messages, giving U.S. forces a strategic advantage during the war.

“This marker ensures the story of the Choctaw Code Talkers is preserved and shared with future generations,” said Dave Lewis, director of the Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department. “Their service, ingenuity and sacrifice deserve to be remembered.”

Speakers at the event included Nuchi Nashoba, president of the Choctaw Code Talkers Association and great-granddaughter of Code Talker Ben Carterby; Fort Worth City Councilmember Macy Hill; Texas Historical Commissioner Catherine McKnight; Col. Brent Kemp of the 56th Infantry Brigade Combat Team; and Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma Chief Gary Batton.

The ceremony also featured a flag presentation by the Arlington Heights High School JROTC and concluded with a blessing from Choctaw Nation Assistant Chief Jack Austin Jr.
