Woman Killed, Two Wounded After Gunman Opens Fire in Two Wichita Falls Apartments

Jeremy Patrick Gibson

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — A shooting rampage at a Wichita Falls apartment complex left one woman dead, two men wounded and multiple others in fear for their lives after police say a gunman opened fire in two separate apartments before fleeing and hiding in his vehicle.

Officers with the Wichita Falls Police Department were dispatched at approximately 5:20 p.m. on Monday, April 20th, to the Brigadoon Apartments at 3220 Seymour Road after multiple callers reported hearing gunfire and identified 43-year-old Jeremy Patrick Gibson as the suspected shooter.

When officers arrived, they found Debra Lucas suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso inside an apartment. Another man inside the same apartment had been shot in the leg.

According to witness statements, Gibson knocked on the apartment door, and when Lucas answered, he immediately began firing into the residence, striking Lucas multiple times and wounding the male victim.

Police said Gibson then moved to a neighboring apartment, where he kicked at the door until a man answered. Investigators say Gibson immediately opened fire again, shooting the man in the chest.  He then entered the apartment and fired additional shots at several people inside, as well as a dog, before leaving the scene.

All three gunshot victims were transported by EMS to United Regional.

Lucas was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police said the man shot in the leg suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to be released, while the victim shot in the chest remained in critical condition.

Wichita Falls Police Special Operations officers were called in to assist and later located Gibson in the 1600 block of Santa Fe Street.

According to police, Gibson was found inside his vehicle, which appeared to be concealed under a tree in a secluded area. Officers took him into custody without incident and recovered a handgun at the time of his arrest.

Investigators said a witness reported Gibson had been drinking alcohol for several hours before the shootings and allegedly made the statement he was “going to shoot somebody” before carrying out the attack.

Police have charged Gibson with murder and five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, including two counts involving serious bodily injury.

Authorities have not released a motive.

The investigation remains ongoing.
