Dallas Police Release Video, Details in Officer-Involved Shooting on Mockingbird Lane

DALLAS, Texas — The Dallas Police Department has released body camera and dash camera footage, along with new details, in an officer-involved shooting that occurred earlier this month in Highland Park.

The incident happened around 2:13 a.m. on April 19, 2026, after an officer initiated a traffic stop on a black 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee in the 4800 block of Preston Road for driving without headlights.

According to police, the vehicle continued into Highland Park and stopped in the 4100 block of Mockingbird Lane.

Suspect: Jeremy Mays

As the officer conducted the stop, the front seat passenger, identified as Jeremy Mays, exited the vehicle and approached the officer.

Police said Mays was speaking incoherently and told the officer he did not have any weapons. As the officer attempted to move him out of the roadway, Mays allegedly assaulted the officer, striking him multiple times and knocking him to the ground.

Investigators said Mays then charged the officer again, prompting the officer to retreat westbound on Mockingbird Lane while being pursued.

During the encounter, the officer fired two rounds, striking Mays once in the abdomen. Mays collapsed in the roadway and was taken into custody at the scene.

Highland Park officers who heard the gunfire responded to assist.

The driver of the vehicle fled but was later identified and interviewed by investigators, police said.

Detectives with the Dallas Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit and Crime Scene Investigators processed the scene and recovered two spent shell casings. Authorities said no firearm was found in the area.

Police said this marks the eighth officer-involved shooting involving the department in 2026.

The Special Investigations Unit is leading the investigation, while the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent review. The Office of Community Police Oversight also responded and was briefed on the incident.

Police emphasized that the details released are preliminary and may change as the investigation continues.
