Fort Worth Suspect Arrested After Shooting Injures Civilian Police Employee, Sparks Lockdowns

Angel Cantu

FORT WORTH, Texas — A man was arrested hours after opening fire in a Northside neighborhood on Tuesday afternoon, April 28th, injuring a Fort Worth Police Civilian Response Unit member and prompting a large police search and nearby school lockdowns, authorities said.

The incident began around 11:40 a.m. when a Civilian Response Unit member was working a burglary call at a home in the 3500 block of Juliet Lane. Police said the suspect, identified as Angel Cantu, 39, was across the street and armed when he fired toward the employee.

The civilian employee was struck by shrapnel in the left eye and called for assistance. Responding officers arrived and encountered the suspect, who fired at them, prompting officers to return fire.

Authorities said Cantu fled into a nearby residence before escaping out the back and jumping a fence. Officers established a perimeter and conducted a search of the home and surrounding area but did not immediately locate him.

As a precaution, several nearby schools were placed on lockdown, and residents in the area were advised to remain inside while the search continued.

Cantu was taken into custody at approximately 5:40 p.m. after being located exiting a wooded area near Riverside and Brittany Place. Police said a weapon believed to have been used in the incident was recovered.

The injured Civilian Response Unit member was transported to a local hospital and is reported to be in good condition.

The investigation remains ongoing.
