DALLAS, Texas — Two suspects are now facing capital murder charges after an infant died following a shooting in East Dallas, according to the Dallas Police Department.
Officers responded around 12:40 a.m. on Sunday, May 3rd, to a shooting in the 4600 block of Wimbelton Way near Forney Road in the Buckner Terrace/Everglade Park area.
Investigators said 17-year-old Yeremy Zapata-Aleman and 20-year-old Keyner Calero-Jiron were involved in an altercation with a man at a business before following him as he drove away. Police said both suspects fired at the man’s vehicle.
During the shooting, a pregnant woman inside the vehicle was struck, and her unborn child was critically injured.
Dallas Fire-Rescue transported the woman to a hospital, where the infant later died.
Both suspects were initially arrested and charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, along with narcotics and gun-related offenses. Following the infant’s death, authorities upgraded the charges to capital murder.
Authorities said Calero-Jiron is now charged with five counts of aggravated assault – discharging a firearm at an occupied vehicle, capital murder, evading arrest or detention with a vehicle, unlawful carrying of a weapon and possession of a controlled substance. He is being held without bond.
Zapata-Aleman is also facing five counts of aggravated assault. ICE has added an Illegal Alien charge to both. They remain in-custody at the Dallas County Jail.
