Missing 8-Year-Old Celina Boy Found Dead After Extensive Search Effort

CELINA, Texas - An extensive search involving multiple North Texas law enforcement and emergency agencies ended in tragedy Friday, May 29th, after an 8-year-old boy who was reported missing from his home was found dead in a pond near his neighborhood.

According to the Celina Police Department, the family of 8-year-old MJ Ashmead notified authorities shortly before 9:30 a.m. that the child was missing from their home in the Sutton Fields subdivision in Celina.

Officers with the Celina Police Department and personnel from the Celina Fire Department immediately launched a large-scale search effort.

Numerous agencies assisted in the search, including:

  • Texas Department of Public Safety air support
  • Collin County Sheriff's Office dive team
  • Frisco Police Department K-9 unit
  • Hickory Creek Police Department K-9 unit
  • Prosper Police Department drone team
  • Lewisville Fire Department dive team
  • Prosper Independent School District Police Department

Just after noon, police notified family members that the child's body had been located in a pond near the subdivision.

Authorities said there is no indication of foul play at this time. However, the incident remains under investigation, and police said no additional information will be released out of respect for the family and the ongoing investigation.

The death has deeply impacted the community as residents mourn the loss of the young boy.
