DALLAS, Texas - The Dallas Police Department has released additional details and video footage related to an escape from custody that occurred on May 30, 2026, near Interstate 35 and Illinois Avenue.
According to police, Officers Ibrahim Kante and Kenneth Harper conducted a traffic stop at approximately 5:35 p.m. in the 2300 block of South Marsalis Avenue for a registration violation.
The stop led to the arrest of 37-year-old Stacey Huffman on charges of Driving While License Invalid, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.
Police said Huffman was handcuffed and placed in the rear seat of a patrol vehicle while officers completed their investigation.
During the ride to jail, investigators say Huffman managed to remove his left hand from the handcuffs and concealed his hands behind his body. He also removed his seatbelt and attempted to open the locked rear door of the squad car.
At approximately 6:10 p.m., officers stopped on northbound Interstate 35 near Illinois Avenue in an effort to restrain Huffman.
According to the preliminary investigation, both officers exited the vehicle. At that point, Huffman climbed into the driver's seat and drove away in the patrol car while Officer Kenneth Harper was entering the back seat. Officer Kante remained outside the vehicle.
Police said Officer Harper remained inside the patrol car as Huffman drove away. Harper deployed his Taser, but investigators said it was ineffective after Huffman pulled the wires loose.
Authorities said Harper then drew his duty weapon and struck Huffman on the side of the head when Huffman accelerated the vehicle. Huffman allegedly continued driving erratically, causing Harper to be thrown violently around the back seat.
After traveling approximately 1,000 feet at speeds reaching about 50 mph, Huffman opened the driver's door and jumped from the moving patrol vehicle, according to police.
Officer Harper was able to regain control of the squad car and prevent a collision.
Huffman was rendered unconscious during the incident and taken into custody. Both Huffman and Harper were transported to a local hospital.
Police said Harper was treated and released. Huffman remains hospitalized.
When released from the hospital, Huffman is expected to face the original charges from the traffic stop as well as additional charges of:
- Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle
- Escape from Custody
The Dallas Police Department's Special Investigations Unit is conducting the investigation.
The Dallas County District Attorney's Office and the Office of Community Police Oversight have been notified.
Police said body-worn camera footage and dash camera video are being released as part of the department's commitment to transparency and accountability.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
