ALVARADO, Texas - Two people were arrested Thursday after authorities executing a search warrant at an Alvarado residence discovered dozens of neglected animals, including 86 deceased cats, as part of an ongoing animal cruelty investigation.
The Alvarado Police Department, working alongside Alvarado Animal Control and Alvarado Code Enforcement, executed the search warrant on July 23 at a home in the 200 block of W. Jessup St.
During the search, investigators found 77 live cats, six live dogs, 86 deceased cats and several additional deceased animals of various species.
As a result of the investigation, authorities arrested Lisa Griggs and Michael Morton. Both were charged with Animal Cruelty.
The surviving animals were safely removed from the property and transported to Alvarado Animal Control, where they are receiving care.
The Alvarado Police Department said Operation Kindness and Tri-City Rescue are assisting the city's animal shelter by providing medical treatment for the rescued animals and helping clear shelter space to accommodate the large number of animals recovered during the investigation.
Police thanked Alvarado Animal Control, Alvarado Code Enforcement, Operation Kindness, Tri-City Rescue and all personnel who assisted with the investigation, citing their professionalism, dedication and teamwork during the operation.
The investigation remains ongoing.
