5-Year-Old Girl Dies After Being Left Inside Vehicle in Garland

GARLAND, Texas - A 5-year-old girl died Tuesday night after investigators say she was inadvertently left inside a vehicle outside a Garland home.

Garland Police and Fire departments responded to a residence on Redbird Drive at approximately 8:20 p.m. on Aug. 18 for a medical emergency involving the child.

When first responders arrived, family members were already performing lifesaving measures. Emergency personnel continued those efforts before transporting the girl to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

According to Garland Police, investigators learned that an adult family member had returned home from school with the 5-year-old and the child's sibling. The 5-year-old remained inside the vehicle after the family arrived home.

Police did not specify how long the child was inside the vehicle.

After family members realized the girl was missing, they began searching for her and eventually found her unresponsive inside the vehicle. They immediately began CPR and called 911.

No Charges Filed as Investigation Continues

Garland Police said investigators are working to establish the complete sequence of events surrounding the child's death.

As of the department's latest update, no criminal charges have been filed.

Authorities have not identified the child or the adult family member who returned home with her. Police also have not announced an official cause of death.

The investigation remains active.

Garland Police said that, as part of the department's standard procedures following a traumatic incident, community counseling services will be offered to the child's family.
