The Irving Police Department has implemented a program to equip uniformed first responders with body worn cameras. The use of body worn cameras will allow for recording investigative contacts, aid in prosecuting criminal cases, and providing greater insight to events during post-incident reviews. After a comprehensive research and testing process, the department has entered into an agreement with Taser International to provide the necessary equipment and data storage requirements associated with the use of body worn cameras. The department elected to use the 'Axon Body 2' model camera and utilize 'Evidence.com' for its data storage and retrieval requirements.
The department made an initial purchase of 200 cameras that were issued to officers in the Patrol Division, Traffic Division and the Irving City Marshals office. A grant funded purchase of 42 additional cameras will be distributed among officers assigned to the Problem Solving Unit, Tactical Section, Gang Unit and School Resource Officers. Issued cameras are currently in use and are quickly becoming a valuable tool for the department and the officers.
The implementation of the body worn camera program is another example of the Irving Police Department’s increased use of technology to better serve the Irving community and keep pace with industry standards.
