Irving Police Auto Theft Section Offers Free Wheel Marking

The Irving Police Department Auto Theft Section will be implementing a wheel marking program aimed at reducing wheel theft and assisting law enforcement in the recovery of wheels that are stolen.

This new program will kick-off Saturday, June 20th, 2009 at the City of Irving Auto Impound - 401 Valley View Lane (City of Irving complex located just north of Rock Island Rd.).

Auto Theft detectives will be available from 8am - 4pm. to apply a unique number to the inside of the wheels of the vehicle(s) of any Irving resident wishing to participate in the program.

John Orr, Sergeant with the Irving Police Auto Theft Unit states; “Nearly 25% of the vehicles stolen in the City of Irving are taken solely for their tires and wheels. Most of these wheels cannot be identified and are sold to wheel and tire shops for quick money. By affixing a unique identifying number to an individual’s wheels, law enforcement is afforded the opportunity to list the wheels/property on the National Crime Information Computer which in turn enhances the possibility of recovering them if stolen. Additionally, stickers placed in view on the vehicles gives notification to would be thieves, that the vehicle is marked, adding a visible prevention aspect to the process”.
