Irving Police Preparing for Intensified DWI Engorcement this July 4th Weekend

In addition to T.X.D.O.T.’s Statewide Impaired Driving Mobilization Grant which runs from June 26th thru July 5th, Irving Police are preparing for an intensified holiday DWI Enforcement effort during the 2009, July 4th weekend. The additional initiative will focus on the freeways in Irving specifically searching for drivers that are DWI. At peak times there will be as many as ten officers working the enforcement and they will operate under a “No Refusal” blood draw procedure for those suspected of DWI/DUI.

Additionally, T.X.D.O.T. will be providing added emphasis to Irving’s July 3rd & 4th efforts through the utilization of informational highway signs giving notice and warning to motorists of the specific enforcement and strict procedures. “Irving Police Department DWI Arrest Zone” - “Zero Tolerance Enforcement”

If a violator is stopped and there is probable cause to believe that he/she is intoxicated or under the influence of alcohol or another substance, they will be arrested and offered a blood test. No breath test will be offered. If an individual refuses to give a blood sample the officer will complete an affidavit and a search warrant and present it to the on-site Judge. Once approved by the judge the individual will be taken to medical personnel on stand-by and a blood sample will be taken. (Results of the blood draws taken from those arrested for DWI during previous “No Refusal” initiatives resulted in an average Blood Alcohol Concentration of .18%).

Irving’s continued emphasis on reducing accidents has yielded positive results in our city. Our data for the first seven months of the fiscal year (08-09) shows that the total number of all accidents is down 1%, more specifically, accidents involving the following factors have shown significant decreases; Personal Injury – down 4%, Speed - down 5%, No Insurance – down 24% but Alcohol Related Accidents are up 23%.

The men and women of the Irving Police Department ask that everyone do their part to ensure a safe holiday travel season. Whether you are traveling a few blocks, across town or across the country, please – Buckle Up, Watch Your Speed, Don’t Drink and Drive and Be Alert to the Presence of Hazardous, Fatigued and/or Impaired Drivers that may be sharing the road with you!
