Through August 23 – KidsArts/Kids' Works: A Cosmic Art Odyssey

Focus Gallery

Strait from the vivid imaginations of the KidsArts 2009 summer campers, the exhibit features painting, photography, sculpture and more with an out-of-this-world theme.

 

Through June 30, 2010 – Within the Emperor’s Garden: The Ten Thousand Springs Pavilion

Carpenter Lobby

Exhibit features a stunning one to five model of the Ten Thousand Springs Pavilion, the classic pavilion found within the Imperial Garden in the Forbidden City in Beijing. Hand-carved from red sandalwood and measuring nine feet tall, the model is an outstanding example of traditional Chinese carving. The exhibition also features photographs and text panels, in English and Chinese, with information about the Imperial Garden and the construction of the model.

 

August 1-29 – 9th Annual Art Connection Members' Show

Approximately 150 works of art in a variety of media created by adult and student members of the Irving Arts Center's Art Connection program.

 

August 1 to September 13 – Students' Transportation Art Contest

Dupree Theater Lobby

Original and award-winning artwork from Irving students, created using the theme “Transportation in Texas: the 21st Century and Beyond.” The exhibition celebrates the Annual Transportation Summit held in Irving.

 

ONGOING – SCULPTURE GARDEN EXHIBITS

The Irving Arts Center’s Sculpture Garden features two monumental sculptures by American artist Reuben Nakian. The Rape of Lucrece and Goddess of the Golden Thighs are on long-term loan from the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. Other sculpture includes temporary exhibitions by Eliseo Garcia, Larry Tobolowsky and Larry Whiteley; permanent installations by James Surls, Jesús Moroles and Michael Manjarris; the monumental mosaic Irving Centennial Mural created by artist Francisco Mendoza with Irving youths; and the recently donated sculpture ’03 Politicized Democracy by John Brough Miller.

July 24 to August 8 – HMS Pinafore

Presented by ICT MainStage – A navy captain's daughter falls in love with a common sailor, though her father wants her to marry the First Lord of the Admiralty. This silly, mirthful story pokes fun at the Royal Navy, parliamentary politics and the rise of unqualified people to positions of authority. As with all Gilbert & Sullivan operettas, it's filled with memorable music and a surprise twist. Rating: G

August 3-7 – Theater Camp #10: Comet Tales & Other Interplanetary Adventures

8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

With the help of Child’s Play Touring Theatre, summer campers write, direct and act out a musical production with a cosmic theme. Ages 7-14.

August 5 – Rapunzel featuring Paul Mesner Puppets

10:30 a.m. & 12:30 p.m.

Dupree Theater Lobby

A veggie love story about two avid gardeners, Okra and Romaine, and their beautiful daughter Rapunzel. When Rapunzel is taken to live in a tower with an evil witch, her future looks bleak until a prince arrives. The prince and Rapunzel hatch an escape plan, and soon leaf happily ever alfalfa. Featuring the Paul Mesner Puppets.
