Irving Tops Texas in Green Fleets

The city’s leadership in environmentally sustainable initiatives was confirmed at the 2009 Green Fleet Conference in Chicago when Irving was recognized for having one of the greenest government fleets in America. A two-time award recipient, Irving is the top Texas city recognized in 2009.

Guidelines for the operation of the city’s 1,200 service vehicles include a myriad of measures to promote environmental sustainability. These measures have led to the reduction of emissions that are harmful to the environment.

The Government Green Fleet Award consists of a comprehensive set of criteria tailored around the challenges and requirements of municipal fleet services. Award criteria categories include:
  • Fleet composition
  • Fuel and emissions
  • Policy and planning
  • Fleet utilization
  • Education
  • Executive and employee involvement
  • Supporting programs

“The receipt of this award exemplifies Irving’s green commitment to operational improvements and customer-driven service practices while minimizing the environmental footprint on our community,” said Ramiro Lopez, intergovernmental services and public works director. “Environmentally friendly fleets will no longer be an option in the future—they will be a necessity.”

Measures that support the city’s environmentally sustainable practices include education and awareness programs for city employees and the community. Irving also requires that all new vehicles purchased have the latest available emissions and fuel-efficient technology, and that all operators be trained in the city’s Clean Fleet Policy for heightened awareness of ozone and air quality.
