Irving Police Roll Out New Look for Squad Cars

The Police Department’s fleet of marked squad cars is one of the most visible representations of the city and the Police Department to the general public. Recognizing the need to update their appearance (the current design has been in use for the past 16 years), Chief Boyd approved the formation of a seven member committee (a representative cross section of officers and supervisors) to research and develop design options with the desired goal of establishing a new look that would be distinctive, highly visible and professional. In addition to these parameters, the newly designed city logo was incorporated into the design.

The design committee sought and received input from the rank and file of the department as well as researching outside the department, making every effort possible to develop a design that the city, our citizens and our department could be proud of for years to come. After many months of anticipation, discussion and numerous design submissions, final approval was made and the citizens of Irving will soon be seeing a newly designed police vehicle patrolling their city.

In addition to the new markings and color scheme, the vehicles are being supplemented with window tint to aid in the protection of the numerous electronic components inside the squads by reducing the internal temperature. Initially the department plans to retrofit ten squads that are currently in-service, with the remainder of the fleet to be changed over as they are replaced through normal attrition.

The newly designed squads are scheduled to be placed into service in February 2010.
