Irving, Texas, Police report that during the week of February 22-28, 2010, enhanced traffic enforcement was conducted focusing on teen safety, specifically regarding use of vehicle safety systems (seat belts/car seats). These enforcement efforts were part of a state-wide initiative funded by on-going Click-It-Or-Ticket grants which have had shown continued success across Texas.
Irving officers concentrated their efforts city wide and on all drivers, yet primarily focusing on places where teens were most likely to be driving, such as near the high schools at dismissal time, officers also monitored locations in and around shopping areas, and other frequented areas.
During the increased enforcement dates officers working this initiative observed a very high percentage of compliance by drivers and only a minimal number of citations were issued (a total of 26 seatbelt violations and 2 child seat violations). Of those twenty-eight citations issued, the majority were to adult drivers.
Regarding this most recent initiative, Irving Police Traffic Lieutenant Stephan Granberry stated; "Seatbelt usage has proven effective in reducing injuries and fatalities in motor vehicle crashes and we are very happy to see the increased compliance among teenage drivers and passengers."Coming Up
