2010 Census a Key for Irving Future Planning

You should have received the 2010 Census questionnaire in your mailboxes already.

This year’s form is one of the shortest in history. It will take about 10 minutes to complete, but its importance will affect the Irving community for the next 10 years.

The City of Irving is encouraging residents to complete the form in order to help ensure an accurate count, making certain that Irving receives its fair share of political representation and financial distribution.

"46% of Grand Prairie residents and 41% of Irving residents have mailed their forms back to the Census Bureau, whereas  the national rate is at 54%.  $85 million is saved for every 1% increase in national participation," said District 106 Representative Kirk England.

Census data, a measure mandated by the Founding Fathers and included in the U.S. Constitution, is used to assign congressional seats and is a factor in the redistribution of federal tax revenuesback to states, cities and local communities.

Nearly $400 billion annually is distributed based on Census data. In 2008 alone, the federal government spent, or committed to spend, nearly $16 billion in Dallas County.

Answers are protected by law and are strictly confidential. It is illegal for the Census Bureau to share personal information with any other government agency, including law enforcement. Keepinganswers safe and confidential is the bureau’s highest priority.

The Census Bureau takes extraordinary measures to protect the confidentiality of personal information from the time it is collected until long after it has been combined with other responses to produce statistics. Access to personally identifiable information is tightly controlled.

The Census is fast, easy and safe. Return it in the provided envelope as soon as possible. Census workers will visit households that do not return a completed form by mail.
