Suicidal Woman Fatally Shot by Denton Sheriff Deputies was Same Armed Person Reported Earlier at Arlington Hospital

In an odd case, the Arlington Police Department had been contacted the morning of February 4, 2023, about an armed person at the Arlington Memorial Hospital Emergency Room Lobby.

At 8:55 am, staff at the Hospital called and informed police that a woman walked in the ER waiting room with a handgun and made suicidal comments.   A security officer at the hospital confronted her and advised her to leave the facility.  The woman left the hospital before Arlington police arrived.

Detectives searched the area around the Hospital, but could not locate the woman.  A bulletin was sent to other police departments in North Texas to be on the lookout for her.

Later that day, Denton County Sheriff's Office Deputies located an unoccupied vehicle matching the description sent in by Arlington Police.  The vehicle was found in the parking lot of the Greenbelt Corridor Park at the 6800 block of East University in Denton.

Deputies began a search of the trails in the park and located the driver of the vehicle.  As they approached her, she pointed a weapon at the Deputies.  The woman refused to comply with the commands to drop the weapon.  Deputies fired their weapons striking the woman.  Sheriff's Deputies rendered emergency aid to the suspect but she did not survive.

The woman was later identified by the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office as 29-year-old Victoria Lauren Edwards of Arlington. Her cause of death is listed as gunshot wounds to the torso and right thigh.

An on-going investigation is being conducted by the Texas Rangers.
