Denton Police Investigating Car Crash That Resulted in One Death and a Child in Critical Condition

The Denton Police Department is actively investigating a two-vehicle crash that resulted in a woman’s death and critical injuries to a child.

At 7:33 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, Denton Police and Fire personnel were dispatched to a major crash involving a pickup truck and a sedan in the 8400 block of W. University Drive near Cottonwood Lane. The preliminary investigation shows that both vehicles were westbound when the pickup truck struck the sedan, subsequently causing the sedan to hit a power pole. The pickup truck had moderate front-end damage while the sedan sustained extensive rear-end damage.

Denton Fire transported all three occupants of the sedan to a local hospital, where a 28-year-old female passenger was pronounced deceased. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified her as Patricia Tovar Castro of Denton. A 10-year-old with critical injuries was transported to a regional hospital by air ambulance. The 62-year-old female sedan driver suffered minor to moderate injuries, and the male pickup truck driver was uninjured.

Traffic investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash. Intoxication is not suspected on the part of either driver.

Westbound lanes of W. University Drive were closed for approximately four hours while first responders worked the crash.

This is the sixth fatal crash this year in Denton.
