Irving Public LIbrary Awarded 'We the People Bookshelf' from National Endowment for Humanities

The Irving Public Library is among 4,000 libraries across the nation selected to receive the "We the People Bookshelf" award from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The bookshelf includes a collection of 17 classic books for readers, grades K-12, and focuses on the theme of A More Perfect Union. The bookshelf collection encourages young people to use literature as a means to study America’s culture.

“Through this grant partnership the Irving Public Library can assist young readers in reflecting on the contributions of our founding fathers and the concept of the United States as a union,” said Congressman Pete Sessions. “It also encourages our youth to gain a greater appreciation for American history.”

Since the program’s inception in 2003, members of the United States Senate and House of Representatives have been ardent supporters of this joint initiative from the American Library Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities. The ‘We the People: A More Perfect Union Bookshelf’ will travel to every Irving library in the coming months. Local programs, such as bilingual storytimes and movie marathons, using materials from the award will debut in 2011. For more information, call (972) 721-2458.
