Councilwoman Rose Cannaday was appointed mayor pro tem and Councilman Rick Stopfer was appointed deputy mayor pro tem for 2010-11 at the Irving City Council’s July 8 meeting.
“As members of City Council, Rose Cannaday and Rick Stopfer exhibit exceptional leadership skills and a longstanding commitment to the City of Irving,” said Mayor Herbert A. Gears. “The unanimous appointment of Cannaday as mayor pro tem and Stopfer as deputy mayor pro tem illustrates council’s overwhelming confidence in the appointees’ ability to lead.”
As mayor pro tem, responsibilities for Cannaday now include facilitating City Council meetings in Mayor Gears’ absence. Cannaday, who recently served as deputy mayor pro tem 2009-10, was re-elected to the City Council in May 2008.
Cannaday serves on a number of committees and her term as Place 5 councilwoman ends in 2011. Stopfer, who has been on the City Council since 1998, served as mayor pro tem for 2008-09 and 2002-03. In addition, he served as deputy mayor pro tem during 2007-08 and 2001-02. Stopfer serves on several committees and his term as Place 6 councilman ends in 2012.
